Happy 50th post. Now for some lists

A year of top-ten lists.

Albums released in 2005:

1) Extraordinary Machine, Fiona Apple.

2) Late Registration, Kanye West

3) Songs for Silverman, Ben Folds

4) Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, Paul McCartney

5) X&Y, Coldplay.

6) Knucke Down, Ani DiFranco

7) Francis the Mute, The Mars Volta

8) Guero, Beck

9) Awake is the New Sleep, Ben Lee

10) The Art of Breaking, TFK. Kidding. So kidding.

Movies released in 2005:

1) A History of Violence, David Cronenberg (Director)

2) King Kong, Peter Jackson

3) Crash, Paul Haggis

4) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton

You know what, there are too many movies I missed this year, because of circumstances, that prevent me from commenting on movies. There are just too many would-be goodies that I’d be afraid to comment, for fear of missing the good ones. But here are movies I have a pretty good idea would be good:

Capote

Brokeback Mountain

Goodnight and Good luck

Syriana

Broken Flowers

My battery is running out, so that’s it for now.

Top 10 lists typically consist of 10 of something... but now that I think of it, I will never make a top 10 list with 10 of anything again! Great work.

Now to begin with the bashing of your lists... actually I won't do that, but I will list a few of my favorite '05 albums, just cuz no one will ever listen to me anywhere else.

Perils - Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses
Damn good debut album... possibly my favorite 2005 release

The Tango Saloon - The Tango Saloon
Brilliant! Rivals Perils for my favorite album of the year... not sure which wins. This album is so Astor Piazolla it hurts... and I love that.

Lamentate - Arvo Part
This album could be better than the last 2... crap it's so hard to decide. Classical music the way I like it best: full of emotion. It's not particularly complex, just flat out beautiful.

Frances the Mute - The Mars Volta
They need to ditch some of the lengthy jams and get back to writing more really catchy shit, still this enough good rocking to keep me interested in this album, but it could've totally blown me away had half of it not been ambience.

Black Oni - Guapo
Shades of Univers Zero, could be one of Guapo's best... could be their best.

Crime and Dissonance - Ennio Morricone
You can never go wrong with Morricone. The man is a genius, and while this isn't his best work, it's still easily good enough to be one of the years best albums.

Suspended Animation - Fantomas
How many cartoon themed, in your face rocking metalish albums are you going to hear? Probably my favorite Fantomas album to date.

Futurists Against the Ocean - Asva
It's drone rock! The kind of album you really have to pay attention to... it takes time to develop, but it can really grab you by the balls and pull.

That's what I'll call my list for now.

For the record, my list wasn't really in a particular order...

And the comment below the Mars Volta... I don't know what happened there, I forgot English.

Congratulations, Zok. You just listed the most obscure ten records of 2005 (save Mars). Hey, did you like the new Sonic Walrus Queef album? What about the electric fence wizzers? Those guys were awesome, but their third album, "warts in the key of gross" was way better than their 20th.

First, I listed 8.

Second, they aren't all obscure... who the hell hasn't heard of Ennio Morricone? And even if you haven't heard of him, you've more than likely heard some of his work.

Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses... not a big name, but hell, they just released their debut this year. Same for the Tango Saloon. Sure they won't ever be popular, but good music isn't a popularity contest.

Honestly, I wouldn't be able to name you 8 popular bands that released good albums this year... and I promise you, even if I could, those albums wouldn't hold a candle to these ones...

See, I'm sure many people could look at your list, and say "shit... no Britney Spears or Eminem? What's this guy on." You would think "hm... those people are missing out on some good music" ...

and that's what I'm thinking.

Oh, please add Brittany. She's so talented and wonderful.
She's my idol!

I will add Britney to the list of hacks who need to disappear forever. And hey, I wasn't commenting on the quality of music on your list, but rather the obscurity of the names and, pardon me, but they are obscure. But if you ask me, that's a good quality (unless all you look for in music is obscurity, which is bad) because so much of what makes it to radio these days is such crap. Damn, I'm spouting cliches. Still, truer words have never been spoken. Except these ones: lick my testy-satchel.

As long as it's a good quality... cuz if it were a bad quality, I'd have to push someone down a small flight of stairs.
